News 🗞

Firstly, BLT Pizzas as a Friday Food Special. Just like you remember but bigger and better. Bacon, lettue, tomato, mayo, and a housemade aioli. Come grab one while limited supplies last. Then, Huhn in June is this Saturday! Last year we did this as a reserved event, but this year, we're going back to our roots with an all-day, no reservations required meal. It'll be a full chicken dinner with brined & grilled boneless skin-on chicken leg & thigh, a summery orzo salad with grilled corn, sundried tomatoes, and feta, and a buttery jalapeño cornbread, all for $17.99. We'll also have dessert available, strawberry cobbler, and a few different drink specials... we're thinking a special white glass pour, a rosé glass pour, and maybe a housemade hard lemonade. Come by anytime for any of the above, and we'll be happy to help you out. Now all that fun aside, make sure to check out the Food Features this week... we got some seriously good stuff in.

Wine Feature ⭐️

I am excited about this feature, as will be anyone who just got back from the Italy trip. It is from the vineyard we visited just a couple of weeks ago, Usiglian del Vescovo in Tuscany. This place has an incredible history. The first grapes were planted on the land in 1083 so that the local church could have wine for Mass. In case that didn't hit home with you, that's almost 1000 years of making wine. The unique soil, which is an ancient seabed, and the proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea give these wines a bright freshness. They grow organically and sustainably to protect their land. It really is an exceptional place, and we had a wonderful experience there. We have a few of their wines in the store now, but I'm featuring the 2016 Il Barbliglione, a Super Tuscan, for $29.99. The winemaker says, "Il Barbiglione is the name in Palaia dialect for bee-eaters, a beautiful, colourful bird that lives in lands with a lot of sand. It is a wonderful bird to watch flying over our vineyards. A wine created to satisfy the senses, made from our finest grapes, which reach their finest expression thanks to sandy soils. This wine is the perfect witness for telling the story and the terroir of Usiglian del Vescovo." It has an "intense, complex bouquet, with evident notes of blackberries, currants and blueberries. When first tasted, the wine seems mellow and then evolves into an intriguing tannic explosion. Persistent and surprisingly fresh finish."

Wine Pick 🥂

Boy did I get you a deal on this one... Intrinsic 2021 Sauvignon Blanc from Washington. We've carried a couple of Intrinsic reds before, but this is our first time carrying a white wine from them. I know so many of you love a good Sauvignon Blanc, and now's the time to try one from a different region like Columbia Valley. Wine Enthusiast says of this wine, "Powerful aromas of fresh-cut grass, pineapple, guava and lime zest burst from the glass with each swirl. The acidity is brisk, making the perfect accompaniment to tangy flavors like guava, key lime pie and shredded coconut. Time for a pool party." It is a bit unusual for a Sauvignon Blanc in that it's aged in stainless steel, concrete, and then a brief period in oak. It's got a pretty fun label too, designed by a UK street artist. This wine normally goes for $18-$20 a bottle, and we have it in for you at $11.99!

Food Feature 🐟🥩

Three features this week, all $29.99/lb. First, Fresh Copper River Salmon! Our first delivery of the year came in this week. What makes it so special? First of all, it's rarity -- it's only available for a couple of months every summer during the salmon run in Alaska's Copper River. Of all salmon available on the market, it consistently rates at the top in the categories of taste, quality, nutritional value, and sustainability. Called "the Wagyu of seafood," these salmon carry the highest amount of omega-3 fatty acids compared to the others, which they store up for their 300-mile trip up the 3600-foot elevation increase of the river to their spawning grounds. This extra fat gives the Copper River salmon buttery texture and robust flavor that can't be beat. Remember, this fish has a short season, probably under two months long, so get your fill while you can. Second, speaking of fish, we have back in stock in the ever-versatile Fresh Alaskan Halibut. Third, the next installment of our Dry Aged Program is in! Fresh Bone-In Dry-Aged Prime Strip Steaks from our partners at Buckhead Meats. Aged for 32 days and ready to grill in this great weather coming up.

Oyster Feature 🦪

You guessed it... more Pink Moons from PEI this week. These have bascially become our House Oyster, and we'll keep ordering them as long as they are available. However, we also got Thatch Islands this week. These oysters come to us from Barnstable, MA. They are medium-large with strong shells and plump, silky meat with a briny bite and a limestone finish. Pair the Pink Moons with sparkling rosé and the Thatch Islands with a nice IPA.

Final Thoughts 💬

You may notice that there are quite a few new wines this week... We tasted through what felt like 500 with our distributors to find new and fun things to bring in, and I think we found some real winners. I hope you appreciate what we go through for you 🥴 Come on down to try some of them out, then join us for pizzas on Friday and Huhn on Saturday. Hope to see you this weekend.

Cheers from all of us here at the Wine Merchant!
