Half my beard is gone, the years about to end, I still have my sandals on…I’m good...how bout you?

What a long strange trip this year has been, seems to me it’s been a transition year. The real question is, what are we transitioning to?

Wine News

Just as I had predicted we’re beginning to receive notices regarding price increases starting in January. I knew that wage hikes, shipping costs , natural disaster and climate change would begin to creep into the bottom dollar. We aren’t seeing them in our final weeks order of 2021, but just a heads up, new inventory in January will be reflective of our distributor price increases. Will there still be bargains? You Bet! Additionally, with the new year distributors begin closing out excess inventory. Items that need sold before new vintages arrive and items they no longer wish to carry. Those items will be a major focus for us in January and we hope to snag some bargains and share them with you.

Dan’s Feature

Veuve Cliquot is my final feature of the year. Why Veuve? Because for most of this year it wasn’t available. I spent a frightening number of hours trying to secure some for the store. First, I got my hands on enough that I HAD TO HAVE, then I began to hoard and it wasn’t pretty. If anyone was going to have Veuve in town, it was going to be me. Seeing as how I now have a sufficient number of bottles in hand I’m willing to share it with everyone. So be it Rose’ or Brut, come on down and pick up what you need to celebrate and let’s get this party going!

Dan’s Pick

Sure you have to have Champagne for New Year’s Eve, but how about New Years Day. If you’re like many of us, you’re going to be having a traditional meal and when I think of the dinner table I need a few bottles of Riesling and a couple good Pinot Noirs. So I’m going with Twenty Rows 2017 Sonoma County Pinot Noir, this $21.99 bottle is an easy winner for your table this New Year’s Day. This Pinot Noir highlights the red fruit and sweet spice character that makes Pinot Noir from Sonoma County and Carneros so famous. It displays a hint of earth to complement the cherry, cranberry and raspberry notes that linger over the palate. While here you might as well pick up a couple Rieslings, maybe some nice Kurobuta Chops and a couple jars of Sauerkraut as well!

Food News

Just a friendly reminder don’t forget our special dinner boxes for New Year’s Eve. Each dinner box is made for two and will include: Brie, Demi Baguette and French Strawberry Jam, (2) CAB Choice Ribeye Filets, (2) 4oz Lobster tails, (2) Au Gratin potatoes, Haricot Verts for two, a box of Macarons and, of course, a bottle of Sparkling— all from France. This celebratory dinner for two will be $99.99 and needs to be ordered in advance. Sure, OK you have to cook it, but you can’t beat the price, stay home, start a fire, find a great show on Netflix enjoy a great dinner and the new year together! That’s pretty much been my life for the past 2 years and look at me I’m still smiling…

Final Thoughts

I have a lot to be thankful for this year, Kim’s back and we have added some great new employees to the staff. Chelsea will have everything under control and a plan in place for her impending time off. Me, well I’m not going anywhere, I’ll still be here thinking about what we’re going to do next and always trying to figure out how we can continue this great relationship we have with all of you. We couldn’t do this without you! The best customers a business could ask for. Needless to say the past couple of years have been a challenge, but thanks to all of you, we’re still here, enjoying your company and looking forward to yet another great year with all of you.

Cheers from all of us here at The Wine Merchant!
